Ultrasound

ULTRASOUND INFORMATION

An UItrasound, or Sonogram, is a painless form of medical imaging that reflects high frequency sound waves through the body to create pictures of internal structures in your body.

Ultrasound is ideal for imaging of soft tissue structures of the body such as muscles, internal organs, tendons and developing foetuses.  Ultrasound is also capable of using doppler techniques to image blood flow in the body.

Ultrasound is an extremely safe and non-invasive form of medical imaging as it does not use radiation.

ALL ULTRASOUNDS REQUIRE AN APPOINTMENT. PLEASE CONTACT US TO ARRANGE YOUR BOOKING.

PATIENT PREPARATION

Some types of Ultrasound may require you to prepare before the scan. Please see the overview of the Ultrasound preparation below to see if this applies to you.

ABDOMINAL, AORTA, ILIAC OR RENAL ARTERIES ULTRASOUND

You must fast for 6 hours prior to this examination.  No food, no chewing gum, no smoking, no tea / coffee but small sips of water are allowed.  Please continue with any medication you are currently taking.  If you are a diabetic, please let us know so that we can make your appointment as early as possible in the day.

PELVIS (MALE & FEMALE) or PROSTATE or RENAL (KUB) or OBSTETRIC (PREGNANCY)

You must have a full bladder for this examination.

1 ½ hours before your appointment, empty your bladder and then drink 1 litre of water over a half hour period.

Do not empty your bladder again until after the examination.  If your bladder becomes painfully overfull, you may pass a small amount of urine to ease the discomfort. You may need to drink a further 1-2 glasses of water to maintain a full bladder.

ALL OTHER ULTRASOUNDS

ON THE DAY OF YOUR ULTRASOUND

We are proud to say our appointments run to schedule and on time. It is therefore important for you to arrive on time and be adequately prepared for your examination. If you are late or unprepared for your scan it may have to be rebooked for another day.

You should wear comfortable clothing and you may be required to remove some jewellery prior to your examination. When you arrive on the day of the Ultrasound our staff may ask you to change into a gown depending on the area being scanned.

An Ultrasound scan itself is generally easy, fast and painless. You will be required to lie flat on the table for several minutes, which can be uncomfortable for some patients. During the examination the Sonographer may give you movement instructions to help improve the scan.

Most Ultrasounds take a maximum time of 20 - 30 minutes.

After the Ultrasound you will be able to resume your normal activities.
